Jade knew of me before we were introduced in part because my technical writing teacher gave her my essay the following year. Jade was reading it when I sat down next to her to study. I was surprised to meet her a few days later. We were working with Dr. Steffen Werner on separate research projects, but were brought together to help develop GoCognitive.net. Serendipity cropped up again when we crossed paths at One World Cafe, a coffee shop owned in part at the time by Steffen. I invited her to join me and my friends ice skating while sporting 80’s fashion. I had to work that night at the Bagel Shop, so she hung out there through all the drunken encounters and cooked me breakfast after closing. Shortly thereafter, we invited each other to respective college parties (a singles party and a glow stick party at which fluorescent chemicals were splattered indiscriminately). We next went on a Valentine’s day date. We ate sushi and, most romantically, played Hearts with her roommate. Since then, we have been effectively inseparable, staying in close contact even during long distance, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dan and I met through a series of coincidences at UofI in 01/2009. The first couple times I saw him, he was sitting, and when he stood up, my first thought was "there's no way we could date, that would look ridiculous!" After many late nights talking, we quickly found out that our height was the only thing setting us apart, as many of our values and interests aligned (and we were more or less the same height when lying down!). We have been together through the best of times (celebrations, fun with family and friends, vacations) and the worst of times (the stress that comes with obtaining two PhD's, countless moves, 4 years of long distance, and health misfortunes), and I'm so grateful that Dan has been my partner through it all. He has supported me in every way through my 20s, and without him I would be "crushed," instead of "crushing it." You all are great, but Dan is my absolute favorite person. After 10 years, I still can't get enough of him, and I look forward to many more life adventures together.

port·man·teau

/ˌpôrtˈmantō/

noun

  1. a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others. For example, brunch (from ‘breakfast’ and ‘lunch’) or podcast (from 'iPod' and 'broadcast').

The original Dutch spelling of "Ryskamp" is Rijskamp

The original Croatian spelling of Francetich is Francetić

 Rijskamp

+

Francetić

=

Rijsketić

(Rye-SKEH-tich)

It sounds better than Francamp

"Rijsketic sounds like one of those beautiful flowy Icelandic words that means "a cozy fire in a cottage by the fjords" or something."

- Josh Barrios

Given that the fjords are distant, we take "or something" to mean

"a cozy fire in a cabin by the Tetons."
